And doesn’t that deserve a big celebration?! Last year, I was in San Antonio, Texas, at the Esquire Tavern — which opened its doors on December 5, 1933, in response to the death of the 18th Amendment, celebrating that liquor was finally legal again.

I had planned to be back at the Esquire this year to raise a couple of their outstanding craft cocktails in observance of this happy anniversary . . . but I find myself at home nursing a nasty cold instead. So I raise a glass of whiskey (medicinal of course 🙂 ) and give you my article from the 85th anniversary of the Esquire in San Antonio.

Do You Remember the End of Prohibition? The Esquire Tavern Does!

What? Don’t tell me you don’t remember the day booze became legal again in the United States?

Geez — what was Congress thinking, outlawing alcohol? Then the depression hit, and everyone needed a drink!

That day was December 5, 1933, and that’s the day the Esquire Tavern in San Antonio opened its doors for business.The day we came to our senses and repealed the 18th Amendment, drinkers everywhere rejoiced and took to the streets to raise a glass legally again.

On December 5, 2017, I swung into the Esquire Tavern to help celebrate their 85th birthday AND the 85th anniversary of the END OF PROHIBITION! It’s several years since I visited San Antonio, but I remember this bar fondly — and they continue to make amazing drinks and great food. [read the full article here]

On December 5, 1933, Americans everywhere celebrated the end of Prohibition and the repeal of the 18th Amendment.
