Images and memories collected from my Trans-Atlantic voyage on Star Flyer. Photography and Imaging, Ann Fisher.
My back-to-back cruises on the tall ship Star Flyer started in Malaga, Spain. Twenty-one days and 3,561 nautical miles later, we arrived in Bridgetown, Barbados.
From Malaga, we made ports of call in Tangier, Morocco, and Cadiz, Spain, before sailing to Funchal on the island of Madeira. Then on to Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. Here, the first one-week cruise ended, and we said goodbye to some friends, and hello to new ones. Star Flyer has the capacity to carry 170 passengers; for the crossing, she carried 129.
San Sebastián de La Gomera in the Canary Islands was our final stop before making the crossing to Barbados. It was an extraordinary experience, and the full account of my voyage is: Crossing the Atlantic on a Tall Ship .

In this post, you’ll find a gallery of photographs from the various ports of call along the way.

I had a very animated carriage driver who told me ALL about Malaga. Pity I don’t speak Spanish. Photograph, Ann Fisher.
Loved the tapas in Malaga — this one with eggplant, tomato, and goat cheese, drizzled with a balsamic reduction.
Poking around in fish markets always makes me wish I had a handy kitchen, and the one in Malaga was no exception. Photograph, Ann Fisher.
Oh, the fish!
Why? Do you cook them like this? Was the man just really bored?
Star Flyer docked in Malaga. Cab drivers are unaccustomed to looking for small ships — so I found myself with a long way to walk 🙂 .

Coming back down the mountain, a look at our lovely ship, diminutive in comparison to the other cruise ships.

Magical. Each sunset we sailed into — there really aren’t words. Photograph, Ann Fisher.

Want to hear the full story on what it’s like to sail across the Atlantic ocean?
Here is an excerpt from Crossing the Atlantic on a Tall Ship , which won a bronze prize in the cruise category in the 2017 NATJA Awards.
It is a voyage into our past, a voyage into ourselves. The thirteen days at sea give the time and the quiet to internalize the sounds of the ship, to think. At night, standing on the bridge of the ship looking forward, all is dark. I am surrounded by stars and the sound of wind, canvas, and water. That bright swath of sky — The Milky Way — is resplendent with no other light to distract.
