If you’re dreaming of a festive Christmas vacation, Florence fills the bill beautifully. I love this city anytime of the year, but to see the Duomo decked out with its majestic tree is a real treat.
As a digital Christmas card to all of my readers, here’s a gallery of images from my holiday trip to one of the most beautiful cities in Italy.

If you’re wanting more Italia, have a look are the two articles below, one on my Christmas trip to Florence, and the other a reading list for anyone heading to this Renaissance city.
In those winter nights next to the Duomo, life came back to me. Itâs an 88 step climb to a week I now carry with me always. Paolo opened the door of my taxi. âCiao, Anna. Your trip was good?â He took one of my two small bags, and we mountain-goated it up the seemingly endless flights, Paolo chatting to me the whole way. [. . . .]
Here is my reading list for Florence, and whether youâre looking for nonfiction and history, a book written by a famous Florentine, or youâre looking for the best novels set in Italy, youâll find something here. [ . . . ]
The Year I Touched My ToesJune 14, 2018 at 6:18 am
Oh my, the photo of Florence with the snow. Gorgeous. I love Florence but was quite disappointed with the crowds there when I visited for the first time in thirty years last October. I don’t want to share it with too many people! And I know the Florentines feel the same. Still I am sure I will go back but in the winter. Louise
Even with the tourists, I love Florence. I suppose I’ve been enough times now that I have my own things I love to do, and they rarely seem to involve that many tourists.
Yes I get that. It is one of my all time favourites since I went there as a 20 year old a long time. I have a love affair with Italy and the culture. When I lived in Milan I used to go down for the day and back again with visitors.
Wow Florence is so festive during the holiday season! In Calgary we don’t see as many decorations put outdoor and over buildings. I want to spend Christmas in Europe next year!
Yes, it’s a pretty picture — unfortunately, it doesn’t happen very often, which is why I bought the stock photo taken in 2009 — at least we all get to SEE it that way. đ
Beautiful photo collage. I love the layout, gorgeous photos, and insightful text all overlaid. It told the story of Christmas in Florence with a with style.
Gorgeous images Ann! I love the Christmas chocolates, I actually liked the desserts in Italy best of all! And Iâm so encouraged that youâve been back to Florence many times. Sometimes we get wrapped up in counting countries and miss out on repeat Experiences in amazing cities like this! Happy holidays đ
Thanks, Jen! I think there’s a lot to be said for getting to new countries đ — but I sure love returning to this city where I start to feel like a local.
Again, I have so enjoyed your writings…especially regarding Florence. I took Leslie (my daughter) and her friend there are couple of years ago during her high school spring break. We rented an apartment in Rome and based thereâÂÂŚdid overnight trips to Venice and Florence and stayed in hotels. The apartment in Rome was greatâÂÂŚabout a hundred meters from the top of the Spanish Steps. I found it through âÂÂItaly Perfect.â They are a great outfit run by a couple of sisters who live in Los Angeles and lived in Rome as kids when their father was officed there with General Electric. They will not rent a place unless they have stayed there! Check it out as they have branched out to some different cities as well. I enjoyed your photographs and three looked rather familiar! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
John, thank you so much. Florence is one of my favorite places anywhere in the world. And thank you for emailing me with the link for “Italy Perfect” — always great to have a resource like that when booking an apartment!

How beautiful! It definitely sets the right tone for Christmas. I feel more festive just imagining walking around there.
Woah the photo with Florence dusted in snow is absolutely perfect! I loved my short time there and would love to visit in the winter.
