Journal: Enjoying Flo and The Shoals

First Friday Florence Alabama
On the First Friday of every month, Florence puts on a downtown party — live music, craftsmen, vendors — and a whole lot of fun. Photograph, Ann Fisher.

Flo?

Florence, Alabama, of course — one of the four towns (Tuscumbia, Florence, Sheffield, and Muscle Shoals) that form The Shoals, an area in northern Alabama on the Tennessee River.

My third full day on the road, I left Tupelo in the late morning and pulled in the Shoals Marriott close to noon to start exploring. What did I find? Interesting history, great live music, amazing food, and a cool downtown area — Florence rocks it on so many levels.

Unless you’ve been buried under a rock since the 1950’s, a lot of the music you’ve spent your life listening to came from Muscle Shoals. Check out the trailer for the Muscle Shoals documentary:

There is SO much to see and do in this part of Alabama that my twenty-four hours slipped by way too quickly. I look forward to sharing many more things about Flo and The Shoals!

Now — onward to Rocket City — Huntsville, Alabama!

I’m currently on the road on my way to Huntsville, Alabama, and this is one of the daily (or nearly daily ? ), short posts along the way.

Journal entries are just that — quick, in the moment, on the road posts — rough, barely edited, and on the go. Look for finished articles everywhere else on my blog!
